We did this project to become familiarized with the Shaper Origin handheld CNC router and their plugin for Fusion CAD. modeling for CNC is very different from modeling for 3D printing so it took me some time to make that switch as well as learning to use the Shaper Origin itself with its add-ons like the Shaper Workstation and Plate.

These tools allowed me to use woodworking techniques that I never even dared to try before, like the angled mortise and tenon joints of this project.

The detail not visible in the first picture is how we mounted the seat. In the CAD model we positioned four threaded inserts that we cut the holes for with the CNC, then tapped them with a M8 tap, then screwed the M6 inserts in with some superglue to assist holding in teakwood.

In the CAD model I had started with the stainless steel tubing that is on the boat to guide the seat design. I used that to model the four knobs as shown in the pictures above. They sit tight in between the stainless tubing and also wrap around the tube so that the seat can’t lift up. I printed them in UV resistant ASA plastic and with M6 threads and a very tight pocket for the head of the machine screw so that they can be attached to the seat without tools.
The method is flawless and nearly invisible. I did have to adjust the diameter of two of them to sit tighter... we’re using CAD precision but the welder who built the stainless structure didn’t ;-)
