First teak project
I got my hands on some plantation teak boards and have a project on my list for a seat on the foredeck which is handy when working with spinnakers or just to enjoy ourselves. The trouble (it’s never easy) is that it needs to rest on stainless steel railings that are in a wedge shape like the bow… so joinery requires master woodworking skills that I do not possess. However I hope my computer and CNC router can make up for that 😄

The picture above shows a different color for each board, with one rail and stile removed to expose the mortise and tenon joints. There is not a single straight one, all are angled. I must still work out in which steps and how to mill these but I do think it’s possible so we go ahead and try.
Designing for boards and mortises and tenon joints is very different than for 3D prints. I did not add clearances for the joints as that’s easier to do with the CNC where I can try and adjust the joint to find which offset works best, leaving enough space for glue.

Of course there’s some 3D printing involved as well. For fasteners I came up with these knobs that sit in between the stainless steel railings. They can turn to clamp the rail. I plan to print these in UV resistant ASA with a M6 socket head fastener. i will use stainless steel threaded inserts in the teak for these.
